parade.com/The Detroit Police Department has expressed a few concerns in regards to the parade crowds. There is to be no open beverages of alcohol in the crowds for the parade. The Detroit Police will be on the lookout for this and will be ticketing for public intoxication. Let’s keep the parade a safe and fun time (and our crowds out of the Paddy Wagons!). Please note, there will be no handling out or throwing candy or items from the marchers or the floats. Also, please pick up your trash.
Parade Marshals are need to assist with this year's parade. Responsibilities included are to keep the parade moving and helping keep the crowd out of the street.

save the beads for the babes in the bay.
while in parade, use 1 hand to wave, other to hold onto gallon size thermos mug of tasty beverage. Rum will be my choice after reading these rules.

I agree and am probably not going because the city obviously doesn't want this celebration in their city...
I feel sad for the merchants and bar owners because they depend on this parade to survive and pay taxes back to the city that doesn't care.

I was just informed by PegLeg that for the past 10 years they have had a "No Drinking" on the floats policy (But people always have)
For the past 4 Years they have had a no throwing candy policy from the floats (But people always have)
And each year they say this year "It will be enforced" but it never has.
Drink up and throw your beads and candy Paul Says..

Sounds like it's more the parade chairman than the police.
This is in this mornings paper

Detroit --New rules to make Sunday's St. Patrick's Parade safer have some worried the festivities will become Erin Go Blah.
This year, those marching in the Corktown parade are banned from passing out candy, beads or balloons. Parade chairman Michael Kelly said the new rules were put in place after city officials expressed safety concerns.
Kelly said he informed marchers that police would ticket anyone passing out candy or other items -- but he acknowledged that officers told him no such thing.
"I put that in our parade order so people don't throw candy," Kelly said. "I did that because people don't listen."
Detroit Police spokesman John Roach said police don't plan a candy crackdown or bead busts.
"We're not going to be citing anyone for candy," Roach said. "Ultimately we want people to understand potential risks in throwing candy or beads, and kids darting out into the street to get them, but I don't think anyone needs to worry about getting a ticket."
The parade, which last year drew 75,000 to 100,000 spectators, is known for being lively but family-friendly, and organizers say they can't remember any major problems during its 52 years.
Still, organizers say soaring attendance has prompted changes for this year's parade, which starts at 2 p.m. and goes along Michigan Avenue from Sixth to Fourteenth streets.
Among them: signs reminding partygoers that open intoxicants are illegal; "strict orders" that marchers shouldn't carry them; and additional portable toilets, said Dennis Hayes, president of the United Irish Societies that sponsors the parade.
"That's always been our rule, but maybe we were a little lax about it in the past," Hayes said. "In the past, if we saw someone carrying a beer, we didn't jerk them out of the parade. Maybe this year we will."
John Murrin, treasurer of the Knights of Equity, an Irish-Catholic fraternal group affiliated with the United Irish Societies, said he understands the safety concerns but is "disappointed."
"I'm disappointed and frustrated," Murrin said. "The hard part was telling my 11-year-old daughter that she couldn't pass out candy and balloons like she's done her entire life. She couldn't understand why."
Concerns over flying candy and beads last year prompted organizers to encourage marchers to pass out items rather than throw them, Murrin said, adding it was a "good compromise."
When asked why he banned passing out items, Kelly said, "Because I don't want people passing out candy. If they take things out in the parade, they're going to toss it; or they'll drop stuff. It just creates litter.
"It's not good for the parade," Kelly

I didnt know Tom Cleaver was involved with the parade.
Its a shame, cuz we are actually one of the more responsible floats. One of our major concerns was candy or beads falling to close to the bus. We always make it clear to our marchers to look out for the kids and thats part of the reason the beads get launched several yards away or flat out handed to the kids on the side of the road. The driver has orders to look out for the kids and so do we. Besides our bus is usually moving along at a speed of 1 MPH or slower.

But of course the Tom Cleavers in the world have to try to enforce some unneeded rules to put a damper on a good thing.

This could be the key to us "Giving" out beads... Not throwing, walkers can hand them to moms or kids etc, walk on the edge of th ecrowd and hend them out. Anyway not like the people can stand on top of the bus again anyway....

The thought of the parade being the same with out beads and candy is assinine. It will cut 85% of the fun out of the parade and 50% of the kids and families wont show next year. ltll be just like SPD. Nothing to do with families and just a sloppy drunkfest!
How ever. Make no mistake about it. THIS SUNDAY! Ill keep my drinks either concealed or on the bus during the parade. I will be drinking and I will be looking out for kids and playing it safe like I do every year. Acting accordingly for a family friendly envirement.
But one things for sure I will be "HANDLING" out beads and or throwing them as I see fit.
